Lesson 6 of 6

Track 2 · Lesson 6

Getting a second opinion on a health question

We all have moments when we notice something about our health and wonder what it means — a symptom we have not seen before, a medicine we do not recognise, a letter from the doctor we do not fully understand. AI can help you think it through calmly before your next appointment.

AI is not a doctor and cannot diagnose you. But it can help you understand medical words, think of questions to ask your doctor, and feel less alone when something worries you.

  1. Ask about a word or term you do not understand

Medical letters and prescriptions are full of words most people do not know. You can ask the AI to explain any term in plain language. For example: "My doctor mentioned hypertension — what does that mean in simple words?"

    • Can you explain what [medical term] means in simple words?
  2. Prepare questions for your doctor

One of the most useful things AI can do is help you prepare for a doctor's appointment. Tell it what you are worried about, and ask it to help you write down the right questions to ask.

    • I have an appointment with my doctor about [topic]. Can you help me write a list of questions I should ask?
    • What questions should I ask my doctor about [condition or medication]?
    • Can you help me describe these symptoms clearly so I can explain them to my doctor?
    • What does it mean if a doctor says [phrase]?
  3. Use it to understand, not to decide

It is tempting to ask the AI "do I have X?" or "should I take this medicine?" The AI will gently decline to answer those questions — and rightly so. Only your doctor can diagnose and prescribe. But the AI can help you understand, prepare, and feel more confident walking into that appointment.

Important

AI for Elders is not a medical service. Iris will never diagnose a condition, recommend a specific treatment, or tell you to stop taking medication. For any health concern — especially chest pain, breathing difficulty, or anything that feels urgent — please contact a doctor or emergency services immediately.

The most valuable thing AI can do for your health is help you have better conversations with your doctor — not replace those conversations.

Your turn

Practice with Iris

Ask Iris to explain a medical term you have heard but never fully understood, or ask her to help you prepare questions for an upcoming appointment.
